My Review:

Move over Stephanie Plum & Heather Wells.. Stella Reynolds is the new super sleuth in town.

This book will demand you finish it in one sitting so… set some food out for the children and turn on Disney.  I read it in just a couple hours and loved every moment.  Stella is a news broadcaster in a new city in Tennessee after losing her job in Bozeman, Montana.  I live near Bozeman, Montana (and I know Libby has as well) and her tiny details included about this lovely state are spot on and I loved that.  Her shock of the southern states once she gets there are exactly how I felt when I moved to the south a few years ago.  ‘far at the far’ = ‘fire at the fair’ and that’s the truth for some of those banjo playing southerns (not all of y’all, just SOME – you know, the ones who need subtitles even though their speaking some kind of english).

This book is filled with crazy characters, a hot Nascar driver, jealousy, crazy ex-fiance’s and a news caster sidekick who’s got no fear.  It’s a fun read and a great competitor to the Stephanie Plum series.  Stella is a bit ditzy, not always completely together and not quite sure of herself and that makes for a great amateur super sleuth.  If she had all her ducks in a row the book just wouldn’t be quite as much fun.

I gave this book 5 coffees.

I had an idea where this book was headed but not completely.  There were some twists that didn’t reveal themselves until the very end and that was great.  I did wonder who done it and why for most of the book and never got bored or had it completely figured out on my own.

The only  reason Libby didn’t get a ‘Hells to the Yeah’ rating is because the first 1/4 of the book the chapters confused me a bit by jumping over sections and I felt like I was ‘missing’ something important with the jump but in fact I wasn’t.  Throughout the book the chapter changes were much smoother and I felt like I was really seeing the entire story.  Libby did a great job setting up the main mystery right from the very first chapter.  I would definitely compare Stella and Lucky to Stephanie and Morelli – which is always good.

What I Loved:

-The mystery was great!  Nascar is a HUGE sport(!?) that I know nothing about and Libby did great making the reader feel like they knew it, even if they don’t.
-Stella is a great main character, I will continue reading the series.
-The drama at the news station was a nice touch as well.  I felt like Libby didn’t leave any loose ends for readers.

What I didn’t Love:

-The beginning chapter jumps confused me a bit. (coulda been just me)
-There were a lot of characters, I sometimes had a hard time figuring out who from the station was who.

What I thought of the Cover:

-LOVE the cover!  I know I’ve told Libby this but it’s so stinking cute and SO much better than some of the lame covers I’ve seen on Cozy Mystery (you know what I mean).  This book is definitely a cross between Cozy Mystery and Chick Lit and the cover portray’s that.

My Conclusion:

If you love Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series and Meg Cabot’s Heather Wells series, you will LOVE Libby’s Stella Reynolds series!  It’s a great, quick read and it’s fun.  There is mystery, potential love, craziness and great writing.  You’ll be addicted from book 1 – The Big Lead (which is free this week! grab it HERE).

Read this book… ignore your kids and impatiently wait for the next book, it’s worth it.
