Traditions and Holidays
When I was a little girl I had to ride the bus for over an hour to get home. In the beginning of December my mother would always decorate for Christmas. I remember pulling up to the house on that bus that smelled like gym socks and dirty exhaust, and seeing our front door wrapped like a gift. A smile would spread wide on my face as I looked out the window. Mom had taped red foil and a huge bow, making it seem like our home was a huge present. My stomach would flutter and my cheeks would hurt from smiling as I stepped off the last step. I’d run up the hill and bust through the front door with all my brothers and sisters and clamor to see the other decorations. I specifically recall a Santa and Mrs. Clause that she would hang above the kitchen sink. It had lights, glowing red and green, and it was my very favorite. Every year I search antique shops and the internet to see if I can locate this token of my past. So far I’ve had no luck.
I know how important it was for me to know Mom was going to decorate the first week of December, and how great it was to see the familiar trinkets scattered around. That’s why I love decorating my house now for my own children. We have a tiny little elf that seems to show up every December 1st and travels around the house, sitting in vases, swinging on lights, and riding cows on the shelves. My children love finding him every morning. The other wonderful tradition we have is the tree ornaments. All of them have sentimental meaning. They represent milestones for each child, and they love hearing the story behind each one—no matter how many times they’ve heard it before.
This year we continued another tradition—making up shoeboxes for kids in different countries to open on Christmas day. Each of my children pick a boy or girl to buy for, and we go to the store and buy things for the box. This year they packed the containers with toothbrushes, markers, books to color and write, a toy, and a stuffed animal. It gives them so much pleasure knowing that somewhere across the world someone is receiving this special box. They even add a personalized card and sign it.
It’s the little things that stack up to the be the big things in our holiday traditions. I am very conscious of decorations and routines because I want my kids to have something to take into adulthood—to be able to remark to someone in their future about how delighted they were to arrive home and see that silly elf sitting long-legged on top of the cuckoo clock!
